A flare made form sodium nitrate and sodium benzoate (both sold as food additives). It is initiated by a small primer of potassium nitrate and sugar.
The ratio is 60% nitrate to 40% benzoate, this is 50 gram composition pressed into a tube. It burns a bit unevenly since the chemicals are not milled and only crudely mixed.
